Those who have been following expansion news in Women's ProfessionalSoccer know that the idea of a tenth team being added for 2010 has beenkicked around for some time now.
No surprise here, but that most likely will not be happening.
The Equalizer originally reported in late July that few teams had the capability of coming into the league on suchshort notice, and those that would be capable (Vancouver and Seattle,to mention two) had no plans to enter WPS so quickly.
According to Jack Cummins, head of the WPS Expansion Committee, the expansion process is typically one that takes about 18months. That would cut things pretty close for a team looking to beginin 2010.
"It would be fair to say that the window is rapidly closing," Cummins said of the possibility of a tenth team in 2010.
The league is going to pause on expansion talks for 2011 until itsoff-season meetings when it can assess where it is at with variouscities and investors.
Meanwhile, things are coming along quite well in Atlanta andPhiladelphia, which are getting into full swing of leagueparticipation, Cummins said.
Both teams will learn who some of their first players are in Septemberwhen the Expansion Draft takes place. Almost all of the details ofthat have been worked out, Cummins said, but
he chose not to comment out of respect for players that are still fighting for a championship.
Details should be finalized at the Board of Governors meeting that willtake place right after the WPS Championship on Saturday.
